The Edward Barnsley Workshop

James Ryan (Designer / Manager)
Edward Barnsley (1900-1987) was one of the most important British furniture makers of the 20th Century. His father Sidney, uncle Ernest and their friend Ernest Gimson had been inspired by William Morris and embraced his radical ideas. Today Gimson and the Barnsleys are seen as key figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement and their influence on design has been immense. The workshop Edward Barnsley established in 1923 in rural Hampshire continues to produce bespoke furniture to the highest standards of design and workmanship. James Ryan joined as an apprentice in 1992 and now designs all the furniture.  He has received six Guild Mark awards from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and has designed furniture produced by ERCOL.
